It 2025, jesmonite, graphite and resin, 40cm x 160cm x 5cmThreshold
Threshold consists of four floor tiles, built up like a performative drawing so that it holds the residue of time and touch. At first glance, they resemble blister paving. But here, the blisters quietly spell the word threshold in braille. It’s a tactile language revealing itself to those who reach or step with care. The piece draws attention to the body’s relationship with the ground beneath it, the moment before motion, the pause before the foot descends. It is about becoming conscious of crossing, of the next step not just as movement, but as meaning.
Threshold was installed as part of the solo exhibition The Inhale Before as part of Kunsthaus Dahlem’s ten year anniversary. Visitors were invited to leave a stone beside the tiles. This gesture recalls the Jewish tradition of laying stones at gravesides, a practice of memory and presence. In my work, the stone recurs as a symbol of trace, of physical promise, of remembering. It becomes a way of saying: I was here. You are seen. This place matters. These stones gradually formed a small cairn, itself a quiet collective mark of those who passed through and paused.
