2017, soap and dust on paper, 5 sheets of 30cm x 200cm

Documentation of Clot

Dismember: to take apart. Remember: to put back together.

I pulled apart 50 bars of soap, filled them with dust and kneading them back together into bars. The drawing is a documentation of the use of these bars, which in their new form become a performative tool. The stains on the paper (cut long enough to be as high as I can stretch my arm up or fold myself over), are made by rubbing soap fat and dust into it, a process that simultaneously makes and destroys itself as the dust leaves a mark and the soap removes it. There is something cyclical and futile to this act. Creating and destroying. Making and removing. Being present and fading. It is also the way in which memory and remembrance feed, alter and rewrite our perceptions of events and interpretive frameworks.
